NHTSA’s Cool Sumer tips for a safe and secure trip

NHTSA recommends to follow the following basic car safety checklist prior to your start.


Before you go check your cars tire pressure as well as your spares to avoid flat tires during the course of your journey. Take few minutes to check out your tires for any wear and tear. If the tread is worn down replace your tires.

Belts and hoses

Look under the hoods to check that all your belts and hoses for any signs of cracks. Ensure that they are in good shape .If you find any signs of wear and degrade it’s better to replace them with a new one.

Wiper Blades

Wipers blades are susceptible to summer heat. Check your wiper blades to ensure that they are in good condition. If there is any wear and tear replace them.

Cooling System

Coolant avoids over heating of your vehicle’s engine. Check the coolant level to ensure that  it is adequate. Refill or flush your cooling system if necessary.

Fluid Levels

Check your oil level periodically and if needed change oil as it’s the good time to do it. Service your vehicle if you find any signs of fluid leakage.


Check all your vehicles light to ensure that they are in working condition. Check out your headlights, brake lights, and interior and trailer lights.

AC Check

Check the performance of your AC to ensure that it is working properly before you go. Get it repaired it is not functioning properly.

 Emergency Kit

There are some chances for a vehicle break down even after proper maintenance and car care checklist. It’s better to always have an emergency kit in car. Some of the suggested emergency roadside kits include:
  • Mobile Phone
  • First aid kit
  • Flashlight
  • Flares and a white flag
  • Jumper cables
  • Jack  for changing a tire
  • Work gloves and a change of clothes
  • Basic repair tools and some duct tape
  • A jug of water and paper towels for cleaning up
  • Nonperishable food, drinking water, and medicines
  • Extra windshield washer fluid
  • Maps
