Ensuring safety on the highway – Tips from USA’s expert truckers

American Trucking Association (ATA) as a measure to enhance Safety on the highway has advised the motorist to follow the safety guidelines offered by the America’s expert truckers. Following are the guidelines offered by the USA’s professional truck drivers:
  • Do pre-trip inspections – Before you leave your home check your vehicles tire pressure, fluids and wipers. Even this simple maintenance can prevent many problems that leave motorists on the side of the road.
  • Plan your journey – Avoid traffic problems by pre-planning your trip. Be prepared and make out where you are going.
  • Check weather conditions - Check the weather forecast often before you move. Watch for road ends and diversion.
  • Huge Trucks Have Blindspots – The truck drivers can’t see you if you can’t see the truck driver in his or her mirrors.
  • Do not cut in front of large trucks – Avoid taking cuts in front of large trucks as they are heavier and take a longer to make a complete stop.
  •  Pay Attention – Distracted driving is the major cause for many accidents. Getting distracted even for a second can cause a major accident.  Switch off your mobile phones and PDSs while driving.
  •  Permit a Safety Cushion – Look for a safe path ¼ mile ahead. Leave yourself an out.
  • Drive slowly – Driving faster than surrounding traffic is the leading cause for majority of the crashes. Avoid fast drive in highways.
  • Keep additional water in your vehicle – As a safety kit keep plenty of water, sunscreen and non-perishable snacks in your vehicle while driving during summer months.
  • Fasten your seat belts – Fasten up your seat belts while driving as they save lives.
  •  Follow Traffic Rules – Abide by the traffic rules and signals. Pay special attention to construction work zones.
  • Be careful while backing up – Be sure to look prior to backing up. Walk around your car before you depart. Doing this can prevent collisions.
