Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

Every year nearly 11,000 people die on the road due to drunk driving. In order to lower this count on 29th of August 2011 U.S.DOT has created a Drunk Driving National enforcement crackdown and launched a nationwide, multi-year advertising campaign focusing on getting drunk drivers off the road with a motto Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled OverU.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood states that While we have made great strides in reducing drunk driving over the years, tragically, drunk driving remains one of the leading causes of death and injury on America's roads.

He also added "Through our new national advertising campaign and enforcement actions, we're sending a powerful message to the American driving public -- Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over."

New NHTSA’s analysis shows that the highest risk of the drunk driver involvement crashes occurs during midnight hours.

Other key findings for the drunk driver include:

  • Nearly one fourth of the people killed in a crash in 2009 died between the hours of midnight and 3am.

  • One in three drivers aged 21 to 24 years old involved in fatal crashes were alcohol-impaired.

  • Drivers aged 25 to 34 years old were the second most likely to be involved in these types of crashes.

  • 9PM to midnight and 3 am to 6 am are the worst times of a day with particularly high percentages of alcohol-impaired crashes.

DOT have also released new advertisings this month which convey the message that law enforcement officers are both omnipresent and vigilant in deterring drunk drivers.

MADD's National President Jan Withers says that "we are proud to get collaborated with NHTSA and the heroes who keep our roads safe to remind the public to Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over."
